Bridgeport's Bakery

Bridgeport has a storied history. The neighborhood and its residents define the city of Chicago – tough, hardworking, no frills. To that end, we were surprised to hear a modern bakery laid tracks on 31st street. Thoughts of Sprinkles and Magnolia swirled in our heads. Confused, we made a mad dash south to find out more.

When we arrived at Pleasant House Bakery (964 West 31st Street) the world made sense again. Don’t think you’re getting sweet, dainty treats from this bakery. Like its surroundings, Pleasant House boasts brawny traditional and modern savory pies. And, a la Bridgeport, Pleasant House has some serious roots. All ingredients stem from progressive farming practices at the local, family run Pleasant Farms. Pies include Steak and Ale, Chicken Balti and Mushroom and Kale along with other salty snacks like bangers, mash, tomato sausage and specialty chips (fries). We tried the Chicken Balti Pie, a flaky, curried chicken pie with apricot chutney and the Deluxe Gravy Chips, crispy potatoes covered with skirt steak, steak sauce and cheddar cheese. Everything was buttery, salty and unbelievably delicious.

The décor at Pleasant House Bakery is simple but cool with just a few tables and counter-style service. Head there for dinner (it’s BYOB) or take out. On Fridays check them out for Fish and Chips. Brunch is on the agenda but the date is TBD, so stay tuned...

Located at 31st and Morgan, pop into Pleasant House Bakery and then swing into Maria’s. Make a night of it, Bridgeport-style.
